    Mission

The Korean Language and Culture Project (KLCP) was initiated with the advent of the 1st Annual Korean Teachers’ Training Workshop held in 2000 at the University of Southern California (USC). The workshop targeted all levels of Korean teachers that participate in weekend schools around the metropolitan Los Angeles area. With the intent to provide professional language training in order to improve their teaching skills.
The mission of the KLCP is to twofolds: to carry out research in second language acquisition, applied linguistics, language pedagogy, and the teaching of culture and literature; and to provide a forum for weekend Korean teachers, to enhance their level of accountability, to network, and to present research findings.

    Annual Korean Teachers’Training Workshop

The KLCP at USC holds an annual workshop for Korean teachers in all levels. The Annual Korean Teachers’ Training Workshop has been held since 2001 at USC with the purpose of increasing an interest in the teaching and learning of the Korean language. Its mission is to provide effective teaching skills and to encourage teachers to develop various teaching materials.

The International Conference of Korean Applied Linguistics (ICKAL)

The 1st USC International Conference of Korean Applied Linguistics will be held February 20 -21, 2010 at USC. The conference is organized to promote the research of Korean applied linguistics and to provide a lively discussion of various studies produced by people who are engaged in Korean applied linguistics. The conference will provide many opportunities for scholars and professionals from related Korean language fields to interact with members inside and outside their own particular disciplines.

    Development of Korean Textbooks

The KLCP has been developing a series of new Korean textbooks, Interactive Korean. These textbooks are designed to develop practical communication with all four language skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing in a highly interactive format. In addition, the books not only emphasize important facets of the Korean language, but they also integrate many relevant points regarding Korean culture.

The basis for the textbooks’ teaching methods is that authentic and meaningful communication should be the goal of classroom activities, and language is best learned through meaningful communication. Specifically, the textbooks offer comprehensive grammar practice, as well as communicative activities that build fluency and accuracy through practice and application. An added feature includes high-interest topics that focus on both accuracy and fluency.

    Korean Culture Day

In 2002, the KLCP hosted a Korean Culture Day in partnership with the Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles, the USC East Asian Library, and the USC student club, Korean Culture Awareness Association. This event provided opportunities to observe various performances, including taekwondo, fan dance, drum dance, and hwakwanmu (traditional Korean dance). There was also the chance to learn samulnori (traditional Korean percussion quartet)and to play traditional Korean games. Participants were able to sample various Korean foods, including bulgogi and kimchi, try on a hanbok (traditional Korean clothes), and watch Korean movies at the USC East Asian library.

Development of Korean Language Proficiency Tests

Researchers of the KLCP visited public schools and Korean weekend schools around the metropolitan Los Angeles area. The school site visits were designed to review and analyze the existing types and methods of Korean language assessment as well as to identify the needs for proficiency tests both in K-12 and in weekend school settings. To achieve this, our researchers interviewed Korean language teachers and investigated existing types of assessment to analyze: (a) content validity, (b) grade level appropriateness, (c) cultural fairness, and (d) presentation layout. Based on the needs analysis, evaluation protocols will be developed for performance-based assessment tests for Korean programs in grades K-12. The assessment will be drawn from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages(ACTFL) performance guidelines for K-12 Learners & 5C’s (Communication, Culture, Connecting, Comparisons and Communities) of the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning.

The First International Conference on Korean People

The KLCP held the First International Conference on Korean People: Past, Present, and Future at USC Bovard Auditorium from June 2-3, 2006, co-sponsored by Hanmin University and World Cyber University in Korea.  The purpose of the conference was to research the roots, movement, ideologies, and mission of the Korean people in over 200 countries worldwide from a linguistic, historical and cultural perspective. Also, through this research, the conference aimed to contribute to the globalization of Pan-Korean studies through establishing a network among scholars. In this conference, a panel of experts in Korean studies had an in-depth discussion on interreligious, intercultural, and interracial conflicts regarding the Korean people. Based on this discussion, the panel presented ideas to solve currently distorted views of Korean tradition and customs. In addition, the panel discussed possible solutions for intergenerational conflict, strained relations between North and South Korea, and Eastern and Western nations.
